18 delivery riders have tragically lost their lives on Dubai roads in 2024

Advocates and workers say that casualties among food delivery riders are mounting in the city of Dubai, as the pandemic accelerates a boom in customer demand. In 2024, Dubai has seen a troubling increase in traffic violations involving delivery riders, with 18 deaths reported so far. Dubai Police revealed that delivery motorcyclists have committed over 77,200 traffic violations this year, a significant rise from the 60,471 violations recorded in 2023. Despite this increase in infractions, the number of fatalities has remained steady at 18, underscoring the serious risks these workers face on the roads.

These alarming figures have led Dubai Police to initiate an awareness campaign focused on enhancing road safety for delivery riders. In a video posted on social media, police officials called on motorcyclists to strictly follow traffic regulations, including staying in their designated lanes and avoiding hazardous actions like sudden swerving and overtaking from the shoulder. Such behaviors, often exhibited by delivery riders in a rush to meet deadlines, have been identified as key factors in accidents and fatalities.

Over the last four years, 181 delivery riders have suffered severe injuries in road accidents, many of which are attributed to reckless driving. Data indicates that distractions, improper lane changes, and unsafe overtaking maneuvers are frequent causes of crashes involving delivery motorcycles. The police have stressed that while prompt deliveries are important, prioritizing safety on the road is crucial for both riders and other road users.

As part of their ongoing efforts to minimize accidents, Dubai Police continues to encourage delivery riders to remain alert and focused while driving, emphasizing that safety must always take precedence. This campaign seeks to raise awareness not only among riders but also within the general public, aiming to create a safer road environment for everyone.
