“We started our journey from the desert and reached beyond the skies to explore the Moon, Mars, and even the asteroid belt,” said Sheikh Hamdan, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Supreme Space Council.

Economic Highlights and Growth in Space Exploration

Sheikh Hamdan chaired the first meeting of the Supreme Space Council, where he reviewed the space sector’s significant economic contributions. Spending on research and development in space exploration increased by 14.8% compared to the previous year. Private sector investments accounted for 44.3% of the total, and the number of companies operating in the sector grew by 29% annually.

“Today, the UAE leads five national projects focused on exploring the Moon, Mars, and the asteroid belt. We have developed a skilled workforce to handle complex scientific missions,” he added.

Future Vision for the UAE Space Industry

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted plans to strengthen the sector further by fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, encouraging innovation, and driving future goals. The UAE continues to set global records, becoming the first country to launch a mission to explore the asteroid belt and the first in the region to join the Artemis programme.

Upcoming projects include the Thuraya 4 satellite, set to launch in December 2024, and the MBZ-SAT, under development by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, with a launch planned for January 2025.

“The UAE’s space sector is a source of immense pride. Its achievements are the cornerstone of innovation and scientific progress in the country,” Sheikh Hamdan said.

High-Level Participation at Supreme Space Council Meeting

The meeting was attended by prominent UAE leaders, including Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Secretary-General of the Supreme Space Council; Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy; and Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.
