Gisele’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, confessed to drugging her repeatedly over nearly a decade. He also admitted to allowing strangers he met online to sexually assault her unconscious body while recording the abuse.

On Thursday, a panel of five judges in Avignon sentenced Dominique, 72, to the maximum 20 years in prison, as requested by prosecutors. The other 50 defendants face sentences ranging from four to 18 years, with charges primarily involving the rape of the unconscious Gisele. Sentencing continued through the morning.

Victim’s Courage Sparks Support

Supporters outside the court cheered as news of the guilty verdicts spread. During the three-month trial, Dominique apologized to his family but admitted that the strangers he invited home knew Gisele was unaware of what was happening to her. Some defendants argued they believed it was a consensual arrangement orchestrated by the couple. However, the court found otherwise.

Gisele Speaks Out for Justice

Gisele, also 72, waived her anonymity and insisted that graphic videos recorded by Dominique be shown in court. She believed this could inspire other victims to come forward.

“I’ve decided not to be ashamed. I did nothing wrong,” Gisele testified. “They are the ones who should feel shame.”

Her bravery sparked protests across France, with rallies supporting her and calling for updates to the country’s rape laws, which currently lack explicit consent requirements.

Family’s Support in Court

Gisele’s children, David, Caroline, and Florian, stood by her side in court as the verdict was delivered. The siblings have been vocal in their condemnation of their father’s actions.

The case has not only highlighted the importance of consent in law but also showcased Gisele’s determination to confront her abusers and seek justice.
