The wait is finally over for Christopher Nolan fans! Universal Studios announced on Monday that the legendary filmmaker is taking on Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey for his next film. Set to be a “mythic action epic,” the movie will hit theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal shared, “Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology.” This groundbreaking project also marks the first time Homer’s famous tale will be showcased on IMAX screens.
The movie boasts a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron.
Known for his iconic films like Oppenheimer, Inception, and Interstellar, Nolan is now exploring the realm of ancient mythology. The Odyssey follows the incredible journey of Odysseus as he faces trials and challenges on his way home after the Trojan War.
Although The Odyssey has been adapted before like the 1954 film Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas and the Coen brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) Nolan’s version promises his signature blend of realism and visually stunning storytelling.
This announcement caps off an incredible year for Nolan. After winning Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director with Oppenheimer, he was recently knighted by King Charles.
