The Sheikh Zayed Festival in Abu Dhabi attracted huge crowds eager to witness its dazzling 53-minute-long fireworks display, with visitors arriving from all over the UAE. Some arrived as early as 1 pm to avoid the anticipated traffic.

For Rashid, Salim, and Mohammed Al Azmi, cousins who traveled from Fujairah with their families, the excitement was unmistakable. “We usually celebrate in the desert, but this time we wanted to experience the fireworks up close in Abu Dhabi,” said Rashid. Salim added, “This is our first time in Abu Dhabi for New Year’s and also our first visit to the Sheikh Zayed Festival.”

Among the early arrivals were friends Aananya Sehgal and Hannah Pfister, who traveled from Dubai. The Indian and South African duo waited three hours before the festival began. “We’re most excited about the fireworks! It’s our first time attending, so it’s going to be unforgettable,” said Hannah. Aananya added, “The 53-minute fireworks show and exploring a new venue on New Year’s Eve make this a special experience.”

As the doors opened at 4 pm, the festival welcomed a lively crowd. Noe and Sylwia Rosenfeld, a mother and son from Poland, were seen shopping at the Bukhoor perfume market while enjoying traditional music at the Heritage Village.

“We’ve visited the UAE since 2008, but this is our first time here,” they shared, drawn by the promise of spectacular fireworks. “We chose the UAE for its warmth; back home, it’s below 4°C,” said Noe.

Even Abu Dhabi residents joined the celebrations. Mary, Sarah, and Russelle, Filipina residents who had lived in the city for over a decade, decided to break their usual tradition of celebrating at home. “We came only for the fireworks,” said Mary, adding, “This is our first time at the Sheikh Zayed Festival, and we’ll definitely come again.”

Viktoria and Lex Bartosik, regular festival-goers from Ukraine and Poland, decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the event for the first time. Equipped with camping chairs and snacks, they eagerly awaited the fireworks. “We’re so excited for the show,” Viktoria said.

The festival grounds buzzed with activity as crowds poured in throughout the day. Visitors enjoyed live traditional dances, parades, and exhibits that highlighted the UAE’s rich history. Food stalls offered a variety of cuisines, from Thai to Arabic and Gulf specialties, catering to diverse tastes.

As the fireworks began at 6 pm, launching hourly until midnight, the festival’s energy reached new heights. A 20-minute drone show, featuring 6,000 drones, was set to light up the sky at 11:40 pm, with the drones spelling out “Happy New Year.” At the Emirates Fountain Stage, 80 laser devices promised a breathtaking light and laser display. Over 100,000 balloons were also prepared to be released, adding a festive touch as visitors celebrated the New Year.

The Sheikh Zayed Festival delivered a spectacular celebration, making it a memorable New Year’s Eve for all attendees.
