‘No Days Off’: UAE Residents Serve Communities on New Year’s Day

While most people celebrate New Year’s Day with fireworks, family time, or well-earned rest, many remain hard at work, ensuring essential services run smoothly.

For some, it’s a heartfelt passion. For others, it’s a necessary step toward a brighter future.

Take Reem Abdullah, for example. As a dedicated life coach, New Year’s Day is one of the most important days of her year.

“For many, New Year’s Day means rest and celebration, but for me, it’s an opportunity to help people start their year with focus and direction,” Reem shared. “It’s an honor to guide someone in setting the tone for their year ahead.”

Reem finds the reflective energy of the holiday inspiring. “Coaching isn’t just a job for me—it’s my calling. If someone needs support today, I’ll be there to help them see and plan the life they truly want,” she said.

Her New Year sessions often carry a unique energy. “People are filled with hope and determination on this day. It’s amazing to see that spark and help them turn it into realistic goals. That’s how I celebrate the New Year—by helping others grow,” she added.

For 46-year-old pharmacist Mohammed Abadi, New Year’s Day is simply another day to serve the community. His role means ensuring people’s health and well-being, no matter the occasion.

“Health doesn’t take a break, and neither can I. Being here on New Year’s ensures patients get the care they need when it matters most,” he explained.

Mohammed’s dedication extends beyond his daily tasks. “While others are celebrating, I make sure the shelves are stocked and our patients feel cared for. This is how I welcome the New Year—with purpose,” he said.

For him, the job also brings unexpected moments of connection. “You’d be surprised how many people stop by, not just for medicine but to share their thoughts. Sometimes, listening to them feels like the best way to help,” Mohammed reflected. “It’s rewarding in its own way.”

Meanwhile, 31-year-old Filipino cashier Rose Marie experiences New Year’s Day with mixed emotions. She works tirelessly to support her family back home, often giving up moments of celebration for their well-being.

“I miss being with my family during New Year’s, but working today reminds me why I’m here—to give them a better life. Their happiness makes it all worthwhile,” Rose shared.

Despite the challenges, she finds small joys during her day. “I see customers celebrating and sharing their happiness. It makes me feel part of the New Year’s spirit, even though I’m far from home,” she added.

For Rose, working on holidays has become a moment of reflection. “Every New Year, I think about my goals and the dreams I’m working toward. It keeps me motivated, even when it’s tough,” she said.

These stories remind us that while many celebrate, countless individuals dedicate their New Year’s Day to helping others, building futures, and finding meaning in their work.
