Pathologist Dr. Tay Tien Yaa, 30, was found dead in her rental home in Sabah on August 29, 2024. The independent task force that investigated her death concluded that extreme workplace stress, rather than bullying, was the primary factor that contributed to her tragic passing.

She had just transferred to Hospital Lahad Datu where she headed the Chemical Pathology Unit and was struggling from overworkloads and insufficient equipment. The report showed that overwhelming workloads with a lack of resources significantly contributed to Dr. Tay’s severe mental health issue.

The task force has found no bullying at her workplace but asserted that the severe stresses of her work environment were adequate to cause significant distress. This case has been under much media focus for drawing attention to mental health issues within healthcare professionals working within Malaysia’s public health systems.

In response to the report, the Health Ministry has pledged to address the systemic issues related to workplace stress and resource shortages. They aim to implement measures to support the mental health of healthcare workers and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
