Shackled for 40 Hours: India Vows to Curb US Illegal Migration

Outrage has erupted as harrowing testimonies from Indian migrants deported after attempting to enter the United States illegally have poured in. Most of them spoke of being shackled for up to 40 hours during deportation flights, garnering widespread condemnation from human rights activists. Amid India’s drive to crack down on illegal migration, the ordeal of these deportees shines light on the perils and sufferings in pursuit of the American dream.

Many of the returnees shared their perilous journeys across several continents, relying on human smugglers and paying exorbitant sums to reach the US. Many crossed through Latin American countries, enduring treacherous conditions, detention, and even violence. For some, the final leg of their journey ended in US detention centers before being placed on deportation flights in chains—a practice that has drawn sharp criticism.

Indian authorities, in collaboration with international agencies, have promised to dismantle networks that facilitate illegal migration. Officials are stressing the need for stronger border security measures and legal awareness campaigns to prevent vulnerable individuals from falling prey to human trafficking rings. Meanwhile, affected families continue to grapple with emotional and financial devastation, having spent their life savings in failed attempts to secure a future abroad.

As global immigration policies tighten, the debate over humane treatment of deportees intensifies. Activists urge governments to balance law enforcement with dignity and respect for human rights. For many of those who risked everything to chase the American dream, the reality of deportation has become a nightmare—one that underscores the desperate lengths to which people will go for a better life.
