Are Standing Desks Really Good for You? The Truth About Knee & Back Pain

Standing desks have surged as one of the popular workplace trends into the world of praise that allegedly can improve posture and reduce the risks of prolonged sitting. However, experts warn that standing for extended periods may lead to knee and back pain, muscle fatigue, and joint strain.

Alternating sit/stand is a recommendation, but standing for extended periods can result in increased pressure on the lower back, feelings of stiffness in the knees, and diminished circulation. Recommendations for reducing strain include health professionals’ use of an anti-fatigue mat, proper footwear, and an adjustable desk.

According to ergonomists, the way to avoid discomfort is movement, including small breaks, stretching, and adjusting one’s posture. Standing is not a panacea but rather a combination of sitting, standing, and movement for optimal workplace health.

If you’re experiencing persistent knee or back pain, experts recommend adjusting desk height, using a footrest, and consulting a specialist to ensure your workstation is truly ergonomic and beneficial.
