Rare Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak Hits Pune, India

A rare outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has been reported in Pune, India, raising serious health concerns. The paralysing neurological disorder has affected multiple individuals, with 47 patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and 21 requiring ventilator support in city hospitals. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the number of cases continues to rise.

GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure. While the exact cause of the outbreak remains under investigation, experts suspect potential links to viral infections, contaminated food, or environmental factors.

Health officials have ramped up efforts to contain the spread, with hospitals on high alert and specialists working to provide critical care to affected patients. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for symptoms such as tingling sensations, weakness, and difficulty breathing, and to seek immediate medical attention if needed.

This rare spike in GBS cases has sparked concerns among medical professionals and public health authorities. Investigations are underway to determine possible triggers and prevent further cases. More updates are expected as health experts analyze the outbreak’s cause and response measures.
