Sharjah residents to pay more for Sewa bills with new sewage charge

Sharjah residents will soon be paying more for their monthly utility bills as the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (Sewa) is set to introduce a new sewage charge. From April 1, a charge of 1.5 fils per gallon of water consumption will be added to household and commercial bills.

The plan is designed to upgrade wastewater management infrastructure and further support the emirate’s sustainability efforts. Officials have indicated that the levied charges will help upgrade the sewage system and thereby improve the sanitary services available to residents.

The fee added to the water supply could be insignificant by the gallon; however, frequent users in homes would surely see an impact on their general household budget. Residents need to change their consumption patterns to use less water and decrease the increase in their bills.

As the new policy is implemented, Sewa urges customers to understand their water consumption and explore available conservation methods. The change exemplifies Sharjah’s commitment to environmental responsibility as it raises debate on the implications for households.
