Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been designated as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strengthening the PMO’s leadership group. His arrival is likely to enhance policy thinking, especially in economic and financial management.

A Seasoned Administrator with Decades of Experience
Das, since 2018 the Governor of RBI, was instrumental in guiding India’s monetary policy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. With more than four decades of experience as a bureaucrat, he has occupied consequential roles within the Finance Ministry, influencing banking, taxation, and economic reforms policy.

Strengthening Economic Decision-Making in the PMO
His new position as Principal Secretary-2 is in support of India’s strategic economic vision, ensuring that there is easy coordination between the government, regulatory agencies, and international financial institutions. Experts feel that the appointment of Das will improve the PMO’s financial policy effectiveness and ensure more fiscal discipline.

What This Means for India’s Economic Future
With India advocating more robust economic reforms and foreign investment, Das’s experience will be essential in guiding the Prime Minister on fiscal policies. His leadership will most probably influence India’s monetary policy, maintaining stability and growth in the changing global economic scenario.
