UAE Ramadan Working Hours and Overtime Rules Explained

Private sector workers in the UAE should be kept informed of their rights to shorter working hours and overtime compensation when Ramadan draws near. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has outlined specific rules for just treatment of workers during the holy month.

According to UAE labor law, private sector workers are entitled to two hours of diminished working time per day without deduction of their salary. This provision is applicable to all workers, irrespective of religion or fasting. Employers have to adhere to these rules to escape legal action.

For those who are obliged to work more than the reduced hours, overtime regulations are effective. Workers are to receive overtime compensation, with an extra 25% payment for additional hours worked, extending to 50% if worked between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM. If overtime is more than two hours a day, workers can file a formal complaint with MoHRE.

Compliance with Ramadan working hour regulations is essential for employers and employees alike. All those experiencing conflicts or infringements are urged to seek legal counsel or report to authorities for the appropriate redress.
