Pope Francis is in stable condition after being hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he spent the night under medical observation, the Vatican confirmed. The 87-year-old pontiff, who has struggled with recurring health problems in recent years, is being treated in a special suite on the 10th floor of the hospital.

The pope was admitted for routine monitoring and is recovering well, according to Vatican sources. Though no official information regarding his health was released, insiders indicate the hospitalization is precautionary, after his recent difficulties with respiratory infections and mobility problems.

This is the newest in a string of health issues for Pope Francis, who has previously had intestinal surgery and bronchitis treatment. In spite of his ailments, the pope has kept up a hectic pace, recently speaking about important global topics, such as efforts toward peace and humanitarian crises.

The Vatican has reassured the faithful that Pope Francis is resting well, and more news on his recovery will be released in the days to come. His next public appearances are in doubt, but Vatican officials are hopeful that he will return to work soon.
