Two car bombs loaded with explosives crashed into a Pakistan military base, causing a fatal attack that resulted in a intense gunbattle between militants and security forces, police officials said. The coordinated attack occurred in a high-security area, fueling fears of increased militant activity in the area.

The attackers tried to penetrate the compound’s defenses with explosives-laden car bombs, and security personnel responded with a hail of gunfire, as the situation continued for several minutes with at least multiple casualties on both sides feared. Emergency responders reached the location as security forces battled to neutralize the remaining threat.

authorities are yet to give the number of the dead but the explosions caused intense blasts followed by tremendous gunfire, eyewitnesses said. No group of militants has so far taken responsibility for the attack, although officials suspect terror groups active in the area.

Security personnel have cordoned off the scene, initiating a full-fledged investigation into the modus operandi of the attackers. The attack highlights the increasing security issues confronting Pakistan, with authorities pledging to step up counterterrorism efforts in response.
