Late dancer Sutandra Chattopadhyay’s mother moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a fair investigation into the death of her daughter. Chattopadhyay died in a crash while allegedly trying to escape a group of drunken youths, raising questions over the events surrounding the accident.

The case has evoked outrage, with calls for an open investigation. The victim’s family and supporters claim that key facts related to her death are being ignored. The petition in the High Court seeks justice and accountability in the case.

The authorities have promised an investigation, but the family is not convinced. Though police have recorded statements from witnesses and opened an investigation, the mother demands a fair investigation to ensure those guilty are held accountable.

The tragedy has again brought into focus safety issues for women outdoors. Activists and citizens are demanding tougher steps to avoid such events and ensure that perpetrators are dealt with stern legal punishments.
