Chitra Subramaniam: Amitabh Bachchan Unfairly Targeted in Bofors Scandal

Veteran journalist Chitra Subramaniam said she had revealed how the Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan was roped into the infamous Bofors scandal when no evidence was available against him. Talking candidly about her ordeal, Subramaniam spoke about the high-pressure attempts to rope the Bachchan family into the high-profile arms deal case.

In an interview recently, Subramaniam, one of the key whistleblowers involved in exposing the Bofors scandal, discussed the facts, which included no substantial proof connecting Bachchan to the allegations. She explained how, with keen eyes on the subject, political and media circles sought to implicate the actor, but her investigation remained grounded in facts and integrity.

Subramaniam described withering multiple attempts to coerce her into fabricating connections, showing the challenges responsible journalism faces when politically charged narratives are involved. “The Bachchans were collateral damage in a larger political game,” she said, adding that the saga took an emotional toll on the actor’s family.

The disclosure has reignited public debate over the scandal, which rocked Indian politics in the late 1980s. Supporters of Bachchan are hailing Subramaniam’s remarks as long-overdue vindication, while others call for deeper reflection on the use of media in political power struggles.
