In a major counter-insurgency operation, Indian security forces killed 22 Maoist militants in separate firefights in Chhattisgarh state. The operation, in which one soldier was killed, is one of the biggest strikes against the Maoist movement in recent months. The clashes occurred while authorities conducted a coordinated sweep of known rebel dens deep within the forested areas.
Security personnel initiated the attack after intelligence was received about Maoist operations in the region. Rebels initiated firing during the encounters, prompting heavy exchanges lasting a few hours. Security officials recovered a huge quantity of weapons, including assault rifles, bullets, and IEDs, from both encounter sites.
Officials assured that search operations are still underway, with forces sweeping through the thick forest cover in search of any remaining rebels. Top police officials lauded the courage of the slain soldier, affirming that the operation is one part of a broader strategy to destroy Maoist presence in the area.
The Maoist rebellion, also referred to as India’s most serious internal security threat, has been operational in various states for decades. Officials reiterated their determination to bring peace and development back to affected areas.
