Saudi Arabia earned an important draw in Saitama against Japan to keep their qualification hopes alive in the World Cup. Going into the match sitting third in the Asian qualifying third round, the Green Falcons recognized that not losing to the very strong Japanese would be necessary if they were going to stay within the running in the standings. The result leaves them firmly within the running as the competition sharpens.

The match was a close run thing, as Japan controlled possession and carved out several opportunities but Saudi Arabia’s defense stood firm. The tourists were organized well and used sharp counter-attacks to cause anxiety in the Japanese penalty area. Despite the siege by Japan, Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper made several important saves that ensured the scoreboard was still. The home side and their fans were frustrated.

When the final whistle blew, Saudi Arabia celebrated the draw, as they were able to keep one of the strongest teams in Asia at bay on their home ground. The result keeps them in contention for automatic spots, and their World Cup dreams are still alive. The squad will now turn their attention to their last remaining games, where each point will be crucial in the quest for a qualification spot in the world’s largest football competition.

Saudi Arabia’s head coach complimented his team’s defensive solidity and spirit of fighting, admitting that Japan was a strong team. With important games on the horizon, the Green Falcons will have to keep their momentum going and take their chances to earn a historic qualification. The fans are hopeful, supporting their national team as they move closer to their World Cup dream.
