India Prepares for Abnormally Hot Summer, Forecasts Warn

India’s Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of an abnormally hot summer in 2025 with above-normal maximum temperatures prevailing in the majority of regions. The nation will face intense heat waves, which may pose health hazards, threaten water supplies, and boost power demand.

Heatwave Conditions in Several Regions
As per IMD forecasts, northwest, central, and eastern India will experience extended spells of above-normal temperatures, especially during April, May, and June. The southern and coastal regions will also experience warm nights, contributing to discomfort.

Impact on Agriculture, Water Supply & Health
Agriculture: The heat may stress crops such as wheat, rice, and pulses, impacting yields and food prices.
Water Crisis: Higher temperatures can aggravate drought-like situations in certain states, straining groundwater resources.
Health Risks: The authorities sound an alert for heatstroke, dehydration, and breathing problems, especially for children, the elderly, and people who work outdoors.

Government’s Heat Action Plan
The officials have asked state governments and local authorities to initiate water-saving measures, including:
i.Public education campaigns on hydration and prevention of heatstroke.

ii.Cooling shelters available in cities.

iii.Water management optimized to avoid shortages.

iv.Energy sector readiness to meet the higher demand for electricity.

What to Expect?
With El Niño still having an impact on global weather patterns, India can experience one of its hottest summers in years. The IMD suggests that individuals should take precautions, keep themselves hydrated, and avoid sun exposure for more than a few hours.

As temperatures rise, authorities and citizens are being warned by experts to remain alert and ready to counter the menace of an extreme summer.
