India’s Supreme Court Halts Tree Felling Near Hyderabad University

In a landmark green judgment, India’s Supreme Court has imposed a stay on the cutting of trees along Hyderabad University’s campus immediately, preventing any further clearance until further orders. The order is issued in the wake of growing apprehensions among environmental activists and students about the impact of ecological destruction of the land due to its development.

The bench has ordered Telangana’s Chief Secretary to strictly implement the order, prohibiting any felling of the trees until a final order is given. The step underscores the role of the judiciary in saving green cover in fast urbanizing areas.

Environmentalists and university stakeholders have hailed the ruling as a step towards sustainable development. The judgment is likely to shape future urban expansion and deforestation policies around educational institutions.

While legal battles rage on, everyone waits with bated breath for the next move of the Supreme Court in reconciling urban development and environmental protection.
