Saudi Arabia Relaxes Iqama Regulations: Renewal Permitted Even When Family Overseas

A relief for the expat community, Saudi Arabia recently declared that residents may now renew their iqama (residency permit) even when their dependents are abroad at the moment. The move provides relief to countless families who have been inconvenienced due to past curbs during traveling or document delay.

The directive, signed by the General Directorate of Passports, is meant to assist expats faced with situations out of their control—closed borders, delayed visas, or crises that have detained family members overseas. By eliminating this obstacle, the Kingdom is facilitating citizens’ maintenance of legal status and employment continuity.

This reform is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider efforts to enhance the quality of life for expatriates and simplify administrative procedures. The step is especially well-timed as the nation continues to draw skilled professionals and foreign investment under its Vision 2030 transformation plan.

Both expatriates and employers have greeted the move, hailing it as a “practical and compassionate” move that minimizes stress to families while promoting economic productivity. Authorities also highlighted the need to ensure iqama renewals are completed on time to prevent penalties or disruptions.
