Camera Captures an Endangered Chimp Using a Tool in the Wilds of Gabon

In Gabon’s Bateke Plateau, a wild chimpanzee was seen using a stick to poke a remote camera in an amazing moment that was caught on camera. This provided unique insights into the behaviour of the species when using tools in its natural environment. Primatologists and wildlife enthusiasts around the world are excited about the video, which was released by conservationists.

A member of a critically endangered species, the chimpanzee cautiously approached the camera before examining it with a stick, demonstrating curiosity, problem-solving abilities, and innate intelligence. This behaviour supports the mounting evidence that chimps in the wild can adapt and use tools to interact with objects they are unfamiliar with, a skill that was previously thought to be exclusive to humans.

The video, according to experts, supports the need to protect the Bateke Plateau, one of this endangered subspecies’ last surviving habitats. It emphasises how non-intrusive monitoring methods, such as remote cameras, can be used to study animal behaviour without upsetting the animals.

More than just an interesting moment, this rare video serves as a potent reminder of the chimpanzees’ cognitive diversity and the pressing need to save their declining numbers through habitat preservation and anti-poaching measures.
