TikTok Launches ‘Footnotes’ Feature to Fight Misinformation Creatively

TikTok is in the process of testing a new feature named Footnotes which enables creators to include context or informative background straight into their videos. This is a creative step towards a larger push by the platform to ensure transparency and accuracy in content created by users, particularly while dealing with news, education, and sensitive issues.

In contrast to X (hitherto Twitter), which is largely dependent on user-sourced footnotes, TikTok is not ditching its official fact-checking efforts. Rather, Footnotes is intended to be used in collaboration with other available tools so that users can get the best information available. The two-pronged approach is meant to create a more informed and responsible digital society.

The feature allows creators to include clickable citations and brief footnotes at the end of their videos. Whether it’s pointing to the source of a statistic, linking to further reading, or explaining a tricky problem, Footnotes allow viewers to explore more without leaving the app.

Since misinformation has long been an issue on social media, the move by TikTok to mix creator-driven openness with institutional fact-checking can serve as the new benchmark in sharing content responsibly. The tool is currently under test phases with the possibility of larger-scale deployments depending on preliminary feedback.
