Kuwait Ex-Minister Faces Court Over Lavish Spending of Public Funds

Former Kuwait defence minister Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahd has been sent to the Ministerial Court over allegations of embezzling public funds. Sheikh Ahmad is accused of using KD400,000 from secret government funds to buy luxury watches and cars, sparking grave concerns about the improper use of state resources.

The case, which is currently facing formal judicial review, has raised profound public and political interest throughout Kuwait. The action represents one of the most high-profile corruption probes in recent memory against a top member of the ruling elite. Demands for greater financial disclosure and accountability within public offices have grown.

Reported by the Kuwaiti Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha), the monies were ostensibly spent on selfish luxuries as opposed to coded national security ventures, which is the usual direction of such earmarked funds. The extravagant budgeting trend became known after the conducting of an internal audit.

The Ministerial Court, which deals with high-profile government cases, will now go ahead with legal hearings. Analysts say the verdict could be an indication of Kuwait’s seriousness in addressing financial corruption at the top. If convicted, Sheikh Ahmad may face heavy penalties under the nation’s anti-corruption laws.
