Security forces have initiated a massive manhunt in Kashmir following terrorists’ massacre of 26 persons in a vicious attack on the outskirts of the tourist destination of Pahalgam. The attack, which is one of the deadliest in years, has created shockwaves in the region and precipitated outrage across the country.

Witnesses reported the gunmen firing randomly at a cluster of pilgrims and local employees. Women and children were among the victims, with several injured survivors airlifted to military hospitals. The attack came hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to visit the area.

Counterterrorism units have sealed off mountain areas around the attack site with drones and helicopters patrolling for escape routes. Intelligence reports the attack has all the characteristics of a Pakistan-based militant group, but no organization has claimed responsibility.

The carnage has inflamed passions in the war-torn region, with the government promising “swift and severe” retribution. As security personnel search the Himalayan landscape, doubts grow about how the terrorists infiltrated several security checkpoints to stage the carnage.
