The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be bigger and better still. Based on reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eyeing the expansion of the tournament into a 94-match season as early as 2028. The move would aim to adjust the league’s increased popularity and expanding number of teams with delivering more exciting cricket action to viewers all over the globe.

Presently, the IPL has 74 matches a season, where 10 teams compete for the much-sought title. Yet, with increased commercial interests, increasing fan base, and worldwide reach of the league, the BCCI is of the view that there exists scope to enhance the tournament framework further. Discussion is on regarding planning a staged expansion so that players are not overwhelmed and competition quality is kept intact.

A 94-match season could conceivably imply a longer window, involving negotiations with international boards and broadcasters. Nevertheless, the BCCI is sure that with sophisticated planning, the expansion can be done without affecting international cricket calendars. The concept is to mature the IPL into an even stronger player in sports entertainment.

Fans can look forward to more intense rivalries, edge-of-the-seat finishes, and chances to witness young talent on a bigger platform. As the BCCI hones its plans, cricket fans all over the world look forward to the next chapter in the IPL’s thrilling journey.
