Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has referred to the just-signed minerals agreement with the United States as a “really equal” partnership. The bi-lateral agreement is focused on the joint exploitation of Ukraine’s massive resources of critical minerals—minerals necessary for green technology, defense, and high-tech production.
Speaking during a press conference, Zelensky highlighted the strategic and economic importance of the agreement, adding that it not only enhances Ukraine’s resource independence but also reinforces Kyiv’s place in international supply chains. “This is a partnership based on mutual gain, not exploitation,” he stated.
The pact comes against the backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions and international competition for rare earth minerals and elements such as lithium, cobalt, and graphite. Washington is looking to diversify supply chains beyond China, while Ukraine sees the deal as an important economic lifeline during conflict.
The agreement is said by experts to potentially unlock billions in investment, leading to employment opportunities and growing Ukraine’s economy. Joint exploration, environmentally friendly mining practices, and sophisticated processing infrastructure are seen as high on the agenda under the agreement framework.
