Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector is flying high thanks to the success of its enhanced stopover programme in partnership with Etihad Airways. The initiative, which encourages travellers to spend a few days exploring the emirate during layovers, has witnessed a remarkable 76% increase in visitors this year.
With a strategic mix of hotel deals, cultural experiences, and seamless transit offerings, the stopover programme has quickly become a key driver of Abu Dhabi’s tourism growth. Etihad Airways reports that it expects 130,000 stopover travellers to take advantage of the programme in 2025, marking a significant boost to local hospitality and retail sectors.
The surge reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to establish itself as a must-see global destination, even for short stays. Visitors can enjoy everything from the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to desert adventures, luxury shopping, and world-class dining—all within a few days.
Tourism officials expect the trend to continue, with plans down the line to further individualize and digitalize the experience. The program also fits into the UAE’s wider vision of establishing itself as a global travel, culture, and innovation hub.
