Blinding Dust Storms Hit UAE: Drivers Urged to Stay Cautious Amid Low Visibility

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has issued an urgent weather alert as strong dust storms blow through main regions of the country, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Residents woke up to heavy haze in the skies and falling visibility as heavy winds blew up sand and dust, making it difficult for commutes and outdoor activities.

The authorities in both emirates have moved quickly to counter the extreme weather. The police forces issued warnings instructing drivers to reduce speed, keep safe distances, and be cautious about changing lanes while driving conditions are poor. Electronic boards on main roads are displaying caution notices as dust covers the cities, cutting down visibility to below 1,000 meters in particular spots.

The NCM has predicted that dusty weather could prevail throughout the day, particularly over open desert and coastal areas. People with breathing conditions are warned in strong terms to stay indoors, keep doors and windows sealed, and cover their faces if going outdoors becomes unavoidable. Even flight operations and public transport might be delayed, and passengers urged to check departure times and travel accordingly.

This dramatic change in weather serves to emphasize the UAE’s periodic vulnerability to sandstorms, especially at times of seasonal transition. The authorities remain vigilant and advise the public to keep track of official weather reports. Emergency services are in alert mode, prepared to deal with any mishaps that can be caused by the low-visibility environment.
