UAE Introduces GI Tag System to Support Real Local Products

The UAE has instituted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag system in its effort to conserve and market true Emirati products, where consumers can effortlessly recognize genuine local specialties. For Hatta Honey to Ras Al Khaimah Ceramics, products with the tag are certified to come from particular areas, with the quality and cultural heritage reflected.

The GI tag is a certification mark that identifies a product with its place of origin, ensuring the consumer receives what they are paying for while promoting local enterprises. This is particularly significant in a highly competitive market filled with imitations and foreign imports.

As per the Ministry of Economy, the GI initiative aims to promote sustainable economic behavior by building up the global image of locally produced goods. Consumers will now be able to choose more discerningly by simply checking for the GI mark on their shopping excursions.

Experts claim this trend will also increase export opportunities, as increasingly global markets seek authenticity and traceability. Whether artisanal honey or heritage pottery, GI tags guarantee authenticity and cultural pride at point of purchase.
