Gift Gone Wrong: Expat Arrested for Smuggling Drugs at Kuwait Airport

In an unusual twist, an expatriate was arrested at Kuwait International Airport when authorities found a load of illegal drugs hidden in his luggage. The process took place while he was undergoing a regular customs inspection, when officers noticed something unusual loaded among his possessions.

During the search, authorities found narcotic materials well concealed inside what seemed to be gift packages. The individual, whose name was not revealed, was taken in for questioning immediately. According to reports, he informed the investigators that the packages were intended as “small gifts” for acquaintances and that he did not have ill intentions.

Kuwaiti authorities are still not convinced by the explanation, emphasizing that possession and transportation of drugs is a serious crime irrespective of intent. The case is under further legal investigation now, and the suspect is open to being charged with trafficking and smuggling of drugs—crimes punishable by heavy charges in Kuwaiti law.

The incident is a timely reminder to tourists of the draconian anti-drug laws implemented in the Gulf. Authorities have restated that people are answerable for the contents of their bags and exhorted expatriates as well as visitors to be certain that they are not carrying illegal items unwittingly.
