Sharjah’s beach of Khor Fakkan has been re-opened to the general public following a period of temporary closure after a surface-level oil spill pollution. The spill, which necessitated quick intervention by environmental and municipal authorities, had seen committed clean-up teams laboring day and night in an effort to reclaim the shoreline.
The spill, concentrated in the vicinity of Al Zubarah Beach, created a thin film of oil over some areas of the beach, which caused safety issues and an immediate halt of beach activities. The authorities facilitated quick deployment of containment and cleanup efforts, such as skimming operations and absorbent materials.
Based on Sharjah Municipality, water quality tests now assure that the coastal environment is safe for swimmers and beach users. “We thank the public for their cooperation and are pleased to reopen this much-loved destination in time for the weekend,” officials stated.
Environmental protection staff are still patrolling the site to ensure there is no repetition, and an investigation is ongoing to identify the source of the spill. Tourists are asked to be cautious and report any remaining signs of pollution to the authorities.
