K-Dramas Fans Implored to Go On: Why Season 2 Never Materialized

In spite of its crushing popularity and worldwide fan adoration, Hometown Cha Cha Cha never got a Season 2—leaving fans hungry for more of Chief Hong and Hye-jin’s oceanfront romance. The slice-of-life drama ended tidily, much like many K-Dramas that prefer emotional resolution to prolonged story arcs. But fans insist Gongjin’s world had more warmth, more quirks, and more healing moments to share.

The non-renewal of Hometown Cha Cha Cha is a mirror to a larger pattern in K-Drama, wherein even the most popular shows typically get no more than one season. Writers and producers tend to go for tightly constructed stories with a well-defined beginning, middle, and end—a lesser quantity but better quality. But that has not deterred fans from canvassing and fantasizing about sequels.

Other heart-warming shows such as Crash Landing on You, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Start-Up, and Reply 1988 did the same. Each created a rich world full of emotional depth, but decided to end while it was still at the top—leaving their place in viewers’ hearts forever but never to return again.

Although it is not common for K-Dramas to receive a second season, the global popularity of dramas on Netflix and other platforms has started to change things a little bit. For now, though, viewers keep reliving their favorite scenes, replaying tearful confessions, and hoping against hope that one day a Season 2 will catch them off guard.
