IBS or Heart Attack? My Agonizing 25-Year Struggle with Acidity

For over 25 years, I’ve lived with a question that haunts many: Is this just acid reflux—or something far worse like a heart attack? That constant burning, tightness in the chest, nausea, and fatigue have made every flare-up a moment of anxiety. What seemed like common indigestion evolved into a complex journey with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and chronic acidity.

Even though dozens of tests eliminated heart disease as a possible cause, the symptoms actually matched those of a heart attack in many ways. I have since learned that digestive illnesses can trick your body—and your mind. From emergency room visits to rigorous elimination diets, the journey to a better understanding of my gut has been far from direct.

The actual battle isn’t medical—it’s emotional and mental. Stomach problems require dogged willpower: what you put in your mouth, when you rest, how you cope with stress. Too much coffee or a missed meal can bring on days of distress. But being faithful to lifestyle adjustments is draining, particularly when flare-ups continue to creep in.

Now, twenty years later, I’ve realized that there is no magic bullet—only improved management. Probiotics, yoga, meditation, and plant-based diets have helped. But the greatest lesson? Paying attention to your body is not a choice—it’s survival. And being able to tell the difference between heartburn and a heart attack could save your life.
