In a landmark achievement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia have been jointly elected to the presidency of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) General Assembly for the 2025–2029 term. This marks the first time both nations have assumed this prestigious role, reflecting their commitment to sustainable urban development and regional collaboration.

The election took place during the UN-Habitat Assembly meetings in Nairobi, Kenya, where all 193 member states unanimously approved the joint presidency. The UAE and Malaysia will also serve together on the UN-Habitat Executive Board, representing the Asia-Pacific region.

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, expressed pride in this international recognition, stating that it underscores the UAE’s efforts in promoting sustainable urban environments. He highlighted national initiatives like the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme as exemplars of the country’s dedication to providing adequate housing and enhancing quality of life.

Malaysia’s Housing and Local Government Minister, Nga Kor Ming, emphasized the significance of the joint leadership, noting that it symbolizes regional solidarity and a shared commitment to urban sustainability. He called upon member states to intensify efforts in implementing the New Urban Agenda, aiming to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities worldwide.
