Temporary Travel Permitted to Kuwaiti Women Despite Citizenship Uncertainty

In a major step, Kuwaiti officials have allowed women affected by current proceedings of citizenship revocation to travel temporarily. The goal of the law, which will take effect from June to September 2025, is to give those who are stuck in bureaucratic limbo mobility and legal relief.

Due to the increased scrutiny around Kuwait’s nationality laws—which have been the subject of numerous revocations and continuing legal disputes—this decision was made. The travel window provides an opportunity for the impacted women, many of whom are mothers or spouses, to fulfil personal, medical, or professional commitments overseas.

While the temporary measure does not restore citizenship or resolve long-term residency status, it has been welcomed by human rights advocates as a humanitarian step in the right direction. Activists continue to call for more transparent and inclusive policies.

Officials have stated that the government is reviewing several nationality cases and may introduce broader reforms. In the meantime, the summer travel concession seeks to ease the immediate burdens of affected Kuwaiti women.
