UAE enforces a midday work ban, with fines of Dh50,000 for violations

The UAE has strictly enforced its annual noon work restriction to shield workers from the blistering summer heat, with officials warning of harsh fines of up to Dh50,000 for enterprises that break the order. The restriction, which lasts from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM daily until September 15, prevents outdoor labour during peak heat hours, when temperatures are predicted to exceed 50°C this summer.

Key Details of the Ban:
It impacts all outside workers in construction, agriculture, maintenance, and other exposed industries. Fines vary from Dh5,000 to Dh50,000 per infringement, with possible suspension of business licence for repeat offenders. Exceptions include emergency repairs and important infrastructure work (with special authorisation). Worker welfare measures include mandatory shaded rest rooms with cooling amenities and refreshment stations. Free medical exams for heat stress in labour camps. 24-hour hotline for staff to report violations anonymously.

Why This Matters:

The UAE’s noon break programme, in effect since 2005, has dramatically reduced heat-related diseases. This year, inspectors from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) will perform surprise site visits to guarantee compliance.
