According to US defence sources, the US did not plan or carry out the strikes. The Israeli offensive, which is said to be in response to recent threats and intelligence about Iranian-backed proxy activity, has exacerbated the already fragile relationship between the two old adversaries. Initial reports from Iranian media confirm damage but are ambiguous about casualties.
Trump’s statement, delivered via his social media platform, urged for calm while simultaneously reinforcing his harsh stance towards Iran. “They should sit down and talk before things go too far,” he added, alluding to his administration’s unsuccessful attempts to renegotiate a nuclear accord. His words elicited varied reactions, with some applauding his diplomatic tone and others accusing him of political opportunism.
The international community has urged moderation, with the UN and EU warning that any escalation might spark a larger conflict in the Gulf area.
