BTS’s Suga discusses why his service was longer than that of other members

BTS’s Suga is finally scheduled to finish his necessary military service after 21 months of almost unbroken silence. Fans believed that this was a particularly long time because of his few public appearances. However, what made his enrolment distinct from the others in BTS?

While not in active duty, Suga worked as a social service agent
Unlike his bandmates who served in active-duty roles, Suga was assigned as a social service agent, a form of alternative military service in South Korea. This often applies to individuals with health concerns, and in Suga’s case, it is believed to be linked to his shoulder injury and subsequent surgery in 2020.

What Caused His Extended Service?
Generally speaking, social service responsibilities entail a lengthier service period—roughly 21 months—than active-duty soldiers’ 18 months. Even if the activity is civilian in nature and involves community service, the Ministry of National Defence nonetheless has regulations over it.

Silence, but Not Stagnation
Although Suga was largely silent during his service, fans know his mind never stops working. Before enlisting, he released his acclaimed album D-Day under his solo alias Agust D, and held a world tour. Now, anticipation is high for what creative firepower he’ll unleash upon his return.

The countdown to the return
Suga is expected to be discharged by late June 2025, marking his full return to the spotlight — just as BTS’s eventual group reunion draws closer. His time away wasn’t just a pause; it was a moment of quiet evolution, both for him and for the millions waiting to hear his voice again
