On June 18, 2025, India began Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian citizens in the midst of the growing Israel-Iran conflict, which was characterised by drone and missile attacks throughout Iran. Here’s a thorough examination of how the rescue operations were influenced by missiles, drones, and growing anxiety:

The Unification of Airspace and the Breakthrough in Diplomacy
Iran allowed special evacuation flights by lifting airspace restrictions for the first time since the conflict began. When necessary, the airlift from Mashhad and other cities to Delhi was arranged by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, passing through Turkmenistan and Armenia.

Large-scale evacuation in unstable circumstances
The first flight, which carried 290 students who had survived missile-fire scares and were primarily from Jammu & Kashmir, landed in Delhi on June 19. About 827 Indian citizens, primarily students, have been safely returned home thus far through the Indian Express website.

Evacuees in Danger
As they left academic buildings to bunkers, a number of students described seeing missiles descend close, accompanied by loud explosions and roaring jet noise.

Voices of Appreciation and Relief
“Watched a missile drop out of the sky. tremendous relief and appreciation to the Indian government for ensuring a safe and prompt return. Students frequently conveyed their sincere gratitude for the government’s prompt and efficient actions.

Logistics and Arrangement
Evacuees were moved via land routes to Yerevan (Armenia) or Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) before boarding flights to Delhi. Mission involved continuous coordination with Indian embassies, MEA helplines, and local authorities, along with humanitarian support to Sri Lankan and Nepalese nationals upon request.

The Significance of It
represents one of the most intricate evacuations in India since Operation Ganga, showcasing superior crisis management under duress. It demonstrates quick diplomatic outreach and military-logistical nimbleness while drones and missiles fly overhead. These events highlight humanitarian cooperation despite conflict and establish a new standard for regional cooperation with Iran.

Last Thought
Over 800 Indians, mostly students, who were caught in missile and drone strikes during the Iran-Israel war, have been safely evacuated thanks to Operation Sindhu. They faced fear on the ground, but India’s prompt airlift and crisis management provided them with relief and demonstrated its dedication to its nationals who were in danger.
