Following the stunning display of giant dust devils captured on film in Kalba, Ras Al Khaimah, residents in Abu Dhabi should prepare for rainfall and hail expected on Thursday.
Authorities have warned that varying intensities of rain will begin on Thursday, October 24, and continue through Friday, October 25. The weather forecast predicts light to moderate rain across the Capital, with some areas likely to experience heavy downpours.
“On Thursday and Friday, a combination of moist air from the Arabian Sea, a weak low-pressure system, and a relatively cold air mass is forecast to trigger convective cloud formation in scattered areas, with the potential for light to heavy rainfall,” stated Dr. Ahmed Habib, a climate expert from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).
Dr. Habib explained the shifting weather patterns in the UAE: “This is typical during autumn, where conditions can quickly change from stable to unstable.”
Expected Weather Conditions
- Abu Dhabi: Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated, with the possibility of heavy showers in some interior areas. Winds are expected to be moderate to fresh, accompanied by cloud cover.
- Al Ain: This region may experience light to moderate rain in various locations, with some areas possibly seeing heavy rainfall. Fresh to strong winds are expected, along with a chance of small hailstones.
- Al Dhafra: Rainfall intensity will vary across different areas, with fresh to strong winds and a possibility of small hailstones.
Abu Dhabi Police have urged motorists to adhere to safe driving guidelines and avoid risks during these adverse weather conditions. The Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols stressed the importance of practicing safe driving amid the rainfall and shifting weather.
Drivers are advised to maintain specific speed limits when authorities activate speed reduction systems and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. They should also avoid sudden braking and reduce speed significantly while turning to prevent skidding, particularly during rain. If visibility decreases considerably, drivers are encouraged to pull over safely to the side of the road.
Having a first aid kit readily available is essential for any unexpected incidents, and residents should ensure they have access to alternative lighting in case of power outages.
Residents are strongly advised to stay away from valleys. Given the potential for heavy rainfall, it’s crucial to avoid valleys and low-lying areas susceptible to flooding.
Many UAE residents venture into valleys to enjoy the cool weather or capture videos of flooded areas and dams, often unaware of the associated dangers. To deter this risky behavior, authorities have imposed a fine of Dh1,000 along with six black points for motorists participating in such activities.
Entering flooded valleys, regardless of their perceived danger level, incurs severe penalties. Offenders face a Dh2,000 fine, receive 23 black points, and have their vehicles confiscated for 60 days.
Obstructing authorities from managing traffic or hindering ambulance and rescue vehicles during emergencies, disasters, or heavy rainfall—including in flooded valleys—will result in a Dh1,000 fine, four black points, and a 60-day vehicle confiscation.
