Even as global pressure for a truce seemed to be gathering steam, Israeli military operations in Gaza escalated Monday, killing at least 34 Palestinians. Eleven of the dead were civilians who were at distribution locations waiting for humanitarian aid when they were struck, according to local health authorities.
The strikes took place in the midst of increased international efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after months of fighting, including those from the US, Egypt, and Qatar. UN organisations have issued many warnings about the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where there is still a shortage of portable water, food, and medicine.
