Dubai RTA Upgrades Slash Sheikh Zayed–Al Khail Commute By 40%

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a series of major traffic improvements linking Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Street, resulting in a dramatic 40% reduction in commute times during peak hours .

Key enhancements include:

Exit No. D69 widened from one to two lanes, doubling its capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour and significantly reducing queuing . The bridge over First Al Khail Road expanded from three to four lanes in each direction, scaling capacity from 4,500 to 6,000 vehicles per hour and trimming daily travel by 40%.

Similar to the bridge, connecting ramps between surface roads increased to two lanes, reducing wait times by more than 50% during peak hours.

These focused improvements have increased commuter happiness, decreased traffic at busy intersections, and improved vehicle flow. They are a component of RTA’s larger plan to implement more than 75 traffic-improvement initiatives throughout Dubai this year.

RTA officials emphasized the strategic importance of facilitating smoother movement along Dubai’s busiest economic corridors, especially as urban expansion continues. These improvements contribute to the city’s vision of becoming a global leader in sustainable and efficient mobility.
