Study Smarter: UAE Sets Strict Criteria for Nationals Seeking Overseas Education

The UAE government has introduced stricter guidelines for national students planning to pursue higher education abroad, emphasizing academic excellence, program quality, and informed choices. The new criteria are part of a broader initiative to ensure Emirati students enroll in internationally accredited programs that align with national development goals.

Under the revised framework, students must now meet rigorous academic standards, including minimum GPA thresholds, standardized test scores, and proof of acceptance to top-ranked global universities. Additionally, selected programs must demonstrate direct relevance to the UAE’s strategic sectors, such as technology, medicine, and sustainability.

According to officials, the goal of the action is to optimise the return on educational investment by guaranteeing that students return with useful skills that directly support the development of the nation. “We want to empower our youth with world-class education that serves national interests,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Education.

These guidelines also aim to reduce drop-out rates and prevent students from enrolling in low-quality or unrecognized programs abroad. A centralized portal will help applicants compare options, submit applications, and track approvals. The policy reflects the UAE’s continued focus on excellence, accountability, and global competitiveness in education.
