Millions of people in Pakistan and worldwide are still profoundly affected by Abdul Sattar Edhi’s legacy nine years after his death. Known as the “Angel of Mercy,” Edhi devoted his life to helping the underprivileged, the forgotten, and the abandoned by founding the Edhi Foundation, which grew to become Pakistan’s biggest charity organisation.
An unwavering dedication to humanity—regardless of caste, race, or color—powered Edhi’s network, which included everything from ambulance services and orphanages to homes for the elderly and mentally ill. His austere way of life—often sleeping on shelter homes’ floors—represented his complete commitment to the cause.
As prominent leaders, humanitarian organisations, and regular people remember Edhi’s selflessness and his conviction that “no religion is higher than humanity,” tributes have been pouring in from all over the world on this ninth anniversary. To pay tribute to his spirit, memorial services, blood drives, and charity initiatives were organised in a number of places.
Bilquis Edhi, Edhi’s wife who died in 2022, shared his dedication to his cause. They raised generations of leaders and volunteers together, establishing a foundation that continues to run dozens of welfare centres and more than 1,800 ambulances. His lasting impact serves as a reminder of what one person’s kindness may do and a ray of hope.
