On the morning of July 9, Vadodara’s Gambhira (Mujpur) Bridge over the Mahisagar River suffered a fatal structural failure that resulted in the collapse of a section during peak traffic. Two trucks, vans, a pickup, and motorcycles were among the several vehicles that fell into the river. Thirteen dead have been retrieved by rescue teams, including the NDRF and local authorities, while rescued survivors have been sent to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

The 43–45-year-old concrete bridge, which was constructed in 1985, was a crucial connection between Vadodara and Anand and had high daily traffic. Before the slab between piers collapsed under the weight of heavy traffic, witnesses claimed to have heard a tremendous cracking.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered an immediate technical investigation, deploying a team of state engineers and external bridge specialists, and announced compensation for victims: ₹400,000 per deceased family and ₹50,000 to injured survivors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, called for immediate rescue and medical assistance and gave ₹200,000 in ex-gratia from the PM Relief Fund.
The collapse draws stark parallels with Gujarat’s 2022 Morbi bridge disaster and sparks renewed scrutiny over aging infrastructure across India. Opposition parties like Congress have condemned the incident, calling it “a disaster waiting to happen” and demanding accountability and regular safety audits of high-risk bridges.
