Pakistan Launches Green Transit Drive, Lahore’s First Trackless Metro

Pakistan’s first-ever trackless electric metro was revealed in Lahore, marking a major milestone in the nation’s green mobility aspirations and a revolutionary step towards sustainable urban transportation. The introduction is a component of the Punjab government’s solar-powered public transportation reform, which attempts to modernise transportation in the province’s largest cities and cut emissions.

Known as a “smart bus rapid transit (BRT)” system, the trackless metro mirrors the layout and efficiency of conventional rail metros while running on rubber tyres. The metro can retain excellent precision, safety, and comfort while running solely on electricity and solar power thanks to virtual tracks and sensors embedded in the asphalt.

Comparing this creative approach to traditional rail-based systems, it is more affordable, eco-friendly, and faster to implement. It is anticipated that the project will reduce fuel consumption, ease traffic congestion, and give thousands of passengers in Lahore a contemporary commute.

Authorities plan to extend the trackless metro to other key urban centers in Punjab if the Lahore pilot succeeds. With this step, Pakistan positions itself as a regional leader in low-carbon transit innovation, embracing clean energy solutions in the fight against climate change.
