Introduction

The Etihad Rail passenger service represents one of the most significant transportation developments in UAE history. This ambitious project will fundamentally change how people move between cities and regions. The national railway network is finally ready to carry passengers. This launch marks a structural shift away from car-dependent travel in the UAE. The railway offers predictable journey times. It includes integrated public transport connections, and a cleaner alternative to congested highways. This development positions the UAE as a regional leader in modern rail infrastructure and sustainable transportation solutions. The passenger service completes the domestic vision for Etihad Rail, following the successful implementation of freight operations across the country.

The UAE’s National Railway Network: Connecting All Seven Emirates

Etihad Rail spans an impressive 900 kilometres across the United Arab Emirates. The network stretches from Al Sila in Abu Dhabi’s western region to Fujairah on the east coast. When passenger services begin operations in 2026, the system will connect 11 cities and regions. This connectivity includes all seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Specific stations will serve important locations like Al Ruwais, Al Mirfa, and Al Dhaid. The railway development occurred in carefully planned phases. Freight operations began back in 2016 with sulphur transport between Shah, Habshan, and Ruwais. The full nationwide freight network connecting all emirates was completed by 2023. The passenger service represents the final domestic component of this ambitious transportation plan. Future development phases may eventually include rail links across the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

Revolutionary Travel Times: Faster Journeys Across the UAE

Etihad Rail will dramatically reduce travel times between major UAE cities. The railway expects journey times of just 57 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This represents a significant improvement over current road travel options. A trip from Abu Dhabi to Ruwais will take approximately 70 minutes on the new trains. The journey from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will require about 105 minutes. Trains will operate at impressive speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour. These rail journeys will cut travel times by approximately one-third compared to driving. The railway will offer consistent and predictable schedules unaffected by road traffic conditions. This reliability represents a major advantage over automobile travel. A separate high-speed rail project is also under development in the UAE. That service will eventually link Abu Dhabi and Dubai in about 30 minutes at speeds up to 350 km per hour. The high-speed rail was unveiled in 2025 and will operate with dedicated stations. It is positioned as a premium, ultra-fast corridor rather than a replacement for the wider Etihad Rail passenger network.

Modern Train Design and Passenger Comfort Features

Etihad Rail will operate two distinct models of modern passenger trains. Chinese-built CRC coaches will carry approximately 365 passengers per train. Spanish-manufactured CAF coaches will accommodate about 369 passengers each. Both train models share a similar three-class layout despite minor design differences. Economy Class features practical face-to-face seating in dark grey colours. This class is specifically designed for short and medium-length journeys across the UAE. Family Class offers opposing seats with larger shared tables between them. This configuration is ideally suited for group travel and families journeying together. First Class provides wider, more comfortable seats with adjustable features. These premium seats focus on passenger comfort during longer rail journeys. All train cabins include overhead luggage storage compartments for smaller items. Each seat features foldable tables conveniently located behind them. Dedicated spaces are provided for larger baggage items throughout the train carriages. Each complete train can carry up to 400 passengers comfortably. Multiple daily services are planned once operations reach full scale. Passenger volumes are projected to reach an impressive 36.5 million annually by the year 2030.

Strategic Station Locations and Integrated Transportation Connections

Major passenger stations are planned in key locations across four emirates. These include significant stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. Station designs draw inspiration from traditional Emirati architectural heritage. Modern facilities will include passenger lounges, retail outlets, and family-friendly amenities. In Abu Dhabi, stations are expected at Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, and Yas Island. Additional stations will serve the Mussafah and Mohammed bin Zayed City corridor. Dubai’s main station is currently under construction near Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station. Another station is planned close to Al Jaddaf and Al Maktoum International Airport. Sharjah’s station will be situated conveniently near University City. Fujairah’s first passenger station is located in the Sakamkam area. Etihad Rail stations are being carefully integrated with existing public transportation networks. Connections will link seamlessly with metro systems and public bus routes. Shared mobility options like e-scooters and bicycles will also be available. This integration aims to reduce friction at the beginning and end of each journey. Effective last-mile connectivity addresses a common weakness of intercity rail systems worldwide.

Ticketing Systems, Future Developments, and Remaining Questions

Passengers will enter Etihad Rail stations through smart electronic gates. These gates will scan digital or physical tickets for access. Booking is expected to occur primarily through online platforms and mobile applications. Ticket vending machines will also be available at all stations for convenience. Multiple payment options will include cash, debit cards, and credit cards. Apple Pay and similar digital payment methods will also be accepted. The Nol card system will not be used for Etihad Rail fares initially. An agreement exists to integrate Etihad Rail with Dubai’s existing public transport payment system eventually. Official ticket prices have not yet been announced to the public. Final timetables and detailed schedules are still under development. Information about connecting transport fares also remains unavailable currently. These important details are expected to be released closer to the official launch date. Etihad Rail plays a central role in the UAE’s national logistics and trade strategy. The network connects major ports including Khalifa Port, Jebel Ali, and Fujairah Port. These connections link directly with industrial zones across the country. The UAE-Oman Hafeet Rail project will extend connectivity internationally. This project will connect Sohar in Oman to the UAE network directly. Travel times between Sohar and Abu Dhabi will reduce to approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

A Transformative Transportation Milestone for the UAE

The launch of Etihad Rail passenger services in 2026 represents a transformative moment for UAE transportation. This national railway network will fundamentally change how residents and visitors travel across the country. The system offers faster, more reliable, and more sustainable travel options between emirates. With stations strategically located and integrated with existing transport networks, Etihad Rail addresses both intercity and last-mile connectivity challenges. The railway supports the UAE’s broader economic diversification and sustainability goals. It enhances logistics capabilities while providing environmentally friendly passenger transportation. As development continues toward the 2026 launch, anticipation builds for this historic transportation advancement. Etihad Rail positions the United Arab Emirates as a regional leader in modern rail infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions for the 21st century.
