To help people appreciate Emirati culture and identity more, the UAE’s Ministry of Community Development has started a series of initiatives called the “community challenge,” which is getting a lot of attention.
This week’s challenge encourages Emirati men and boys to wear their ‘ghutrah’ when they go out. The initiative has become popular in Emirati circles, with many children and adults sharing videos and photos of themselves wearing this traditional headscarf.
The ghutrah is a significant cultural symbol and one of the oldest garments worn by Emirati men. Traditionally, it is considered disrespectful to leave home without it, as it is typically removed only for washing before prayers.
The campaign emphasizes how important traditional clothing is for representing national identity, especially the kandura and ghutrah. The ministry has invited the public to post pictures on social media with the hashtag #CommunityChallenge to showcase the beauty of Emirati heritage.
Participation has been strong across all age groups. Khalid Mohammed Al Suwaidi from Ajman stated, “The Community Challenge is a great effort by the ministry to protect our Emirati identity and culture. It helps connect younger generations to our heritage in a multicultural setting like the UAE.”
Khalid Mohammed Al Suwaidi’s son also participated in the challenge.
Among the participants is young Hamid Abdullah Al Shehhi from Ras Al Khaimah. His mother, Waood Saleh, praised the initiative, saying: “The ministry constantly impresses us with unique ideas that strengthen community bonds. This challenge inspires our youth to embrace their traditions and shows our commitment to cultural roots.”
Abdulrahman Wadi, a content creator, shared: “Parents, children, and young people have responded enthusiastically.”
He added, “This campaign sends a message not just locally but globally. As children of Zayed, we cherish these traditions that maintain our identity and heritage.”
Abdulrahman was impressed that the Ministry of Community Development has also been involved, reposting photos on their Instagram stories. “I even received a message from them.”
In the message, the ministry wrote: “Thank you… You make us proud and set an example of holding onto your Emirati identity.”
Salah Al-Rifai from Sharjah said, “The community challenge is a valuable initiative because we encourage affirming our national identity and promoting it in all local and international platforms.”
Salah Al-Rifai added, “Highlighting national identity is a social responsibility.”
